Lucia Joy Fernandez (b. 1979) is a Spanish-American artist based in the Pacific Northwest. Raised by Cuban refugees - an artist and a technologist - a passion for science, storytelling, and immersing herself in the natural world was formed. Lucia has lived, worked, and studied in many places throughout her life, all greatly influencing her way of seeing and understanding the world through the lens of art and design. With a background in architecture, her practice is grounded in a process of curating work that speaks to the many layers of experience that exist within us, inspired through creating a heightened sense of awareness and experience of ourselves and the world around us.
STATEMENT
‘the extraordinary’s concern is the edge, and the making of a form out of the formlessness that is beyond the edge’
— Mary Oliver
My work is a response to what can be experienced when connecting to the invisible thread moving through all things.
In an intentional process of restraint and revealing, I explore the tension in the space between the depths of soul and the heights of spirit – balancing precision with abstraction, imperfection and clarity, darkness and light, stillness and movement.
I seek out the greater story unfolding beyond the surface, to celebrate and capture the essence of being alive through painting, drawing, building.
