BIOGRAPHY
Lucia Joy Fernandez (b. 1979) is a Spanish-American artist based in the Pacific Northwest. Raised by Cuban immigrants - an artist and a technologist - a passion for science, storytelling, and immersing herself in the natural world was formed. Lucia has lived, worked, and studied in many places throughout her life, all greatly influencing her way of seeing and understanding the world through the lens of art and design. With a background in architecture, her practice is grounded in a process of curating work that speaks to the many layers of experience - the darkness and light within us. The inner landscape is wild - it’s a story that can shift and change with external feedback and inspiration. Her work is an invitation to walk through a doorway, to know ourselves more and more intimately, through the profound act of outer expression.
ARTIST STATEMENT
The aim of my work is to convey what can be viscerally felt by connecting to the invisible thread running between all things, awakening what is essential within us.
The stillness in darkness, the movement and fluidity of the light, tearing down and rebuilding - my path has been one of constant change, growth, and above all - imagination and curiosity. My work seeks to reach the depths and lift to the light - the life force that inspires hope and captures the essence of being alive. In an endless dance of devotion to transcending and evolving my sense of self through experience, my creative practice is informed by a greater picture always unfolding. It is a force that is bold and fierce, yet light and untethered.
Creating is a vehicle - a way of knowing myself and the world. There is beauty to uncover within all things - truly seeing transforms and empowers me.
